Recently, we have had a great opportunity to travel to New York, which we obviously grabbed. On this occasion we were represented by our CEOs who spent whole week in Manhattan. The goal of this journey was another edition of the Smashing Conference which took place on the 17th – 18th June.
During the flight to New York we were truly surprised to discover that we were granted an Internet connection all throughout the flight. It was the first time ever such a possibility was offered to us. It was quite an interesting experience to be able to chat with Vitaly Friedman, who was aboard of another plane flying to New York at the same time as us.
Welcome to the Big Apple!
We arrived at the Yotel hotel late in the evening, so we had just enough time to say hello to Vitaly and his team, have a quick dinner and take a night walk around the neighbourhood.
Let’s all chill and enjoy the view
We decided to spend our first day, which was Sunday, sightseeing. We were surprised to find that Sunday is a much more peaceful day here in comparison to Munich or Cracow.
On our first day we explored mainly Manhattan and a small part of Brooklyn. We visited the Central Park, the Upper Westside and Midtown. Even though we spent most of our time sightseeing, we managed to visit only the most popular landmarks. Yet, owing to the New York pass, we could visit among the others such places as the National History Museum, Madame Tussauds and take a boat trip to see the Statue of Liberty.
To our satisfaction, the weather conditions were ideal for long walks. Daily we covered a distance of approximately 15 km strolling among the sky-scrapers.
Germany – Portugal (4-0)
On Monday we were still concentrating on discovering the beauty of New York as well as integrating with its inhabitants, especially during an evening football match, which was an important event for us, as Germany was taking part and playing Portugal. We met Simon from 42SOME, who is cooperating with creativestyle, and he also joined us to watch the game. Little did we know how many football fans there were in the USA. Happily, the result of that game was 4-0 for Germany. After the match we went to the Yotel hotel to celebrate a welcoming event before the Smashing Conference. We listened to a few short opening talks preceding the presentations that were to take place the following day.
The conference time in the Times Centre.
At the beginning of the conference another original idea was put into practice. Every participant was given a fluo light. Why was it different? Well, depending on the part of the audience that you were in and the speed of the light’s movement, there was a particular musical instrument playing. See for yourself in the video below.
Once we were given a positive welcome, it was time to enjoy the presentations. All of them were very interesting. Generally speaking, what we like about these type of events is that we can learn directly from professionals.
However, we will especially hold in memory the following speeches:
- Meagan Fischer, who shared her own experience with the clients. She talked less about technical aspects of her job and more about practical business knowledge which surely will be useful in the future.
- Eva-Lotta Lamm, who prepared a workshop and taught us basic sketching skills. She also shared examples and thoughts with us.
- Jessica Hische, who is an illustrator, shared her work techniques and discussed in detail the entire designing process.
Party on the rooftop
After the conference had come to an end, all of the participants could enjoy the party on the rooftop and take the last look at the Big Apple. As the day was scorching hot, chilled beer turned out to be a relief.
Back to reality
The trip to New York has been the best in creativestyle’s schedule so far, because we have seen a different reflection of the world that the one we are accustomed to. In addition, it was an interesting travelling experience which we would recommend to anyone. Good choice for Smashing Conference. Congratulations on the selection of location.
